Quicken 98Back

What new online facilities are there?

The new ' Embedded Browser ' is a facility that allows the user to 'Surf the Net' while doing their accounts. This facility is run within Quicken and allows you to get technical support and product information without even leaving the program:

  1. Click on online from the toolbar at the top of the screen.
  2. From the drop down list select Quicken on the web.
  3. From the sub menu select home page.

This will automatically load up your Internet browser, but it will open up internally, i.e. as another window in Quicken.

There is now a facility to allow the user to download currency information, directly off the Internet. As you can probably guess, this would be very useful to anyone who is going on holiday, or anyone who has interests abroad, either a business partnership or foreign investments:

  1. To access this facility, click on lists from the toolbar at the top of the screen.
  2. Select currency from the drop down list.
  3. Then click on the update rates icon from above the list.
  4. When the small dialog box appears, just click on update now and the rest will be done for you.

The other ' New ' online facility is the online registration. This allows you to fill in one simple form, then automatically get access to all the facilities in Quicken. This facility makes registration a lot quicker and simpler. If you need information on registering Quicken 98 then you will find detailed information in another document.

The first of the existing but updated facilities is the share price download. In Quicken 6, although useful, this facility still wasn't easy to use, now with the new updated Portfolio View, we thought it was about time to change the download facility, and make it easier to use.

To use this facility you first need to know the 'ticker symbols', if you've already put these in then read on. If not then you need to read the section below about looking up the ticker symbols:

  1. Click on online from the toolbar at the top of the screen.
  2. Select 'Update Quicken 98' from the drop down list.
  3. Make sure online quotes is ticked in the small dialog box that appears.
  4. Click on the customise icon to make sure all the symbols are entered and correct.
  5. When you know all the information is correct, then click on the update now icon, in the bottom right hand corner of the box.
  6. When Quicken has finished downloading the prices, all you need to do is view the changes in portfolio view.

The last online facility in Quicken 98, is the Symbol Lookup facility. Again, this facility existed in Quicken 6, but has been much improved in this version. The way the lookup works now is: An internal browser is loaded up, and you are taken to a special web page run by Quicken. On this web page is a search engine that will allow you to search for your required security symbol:

  1. Click on lists from the toolbar at the top of the screen.
  2. Click on investments from the drop down list.
  3. Select Security from the sub-menu.
  4. When in the security list, highlight a security by left-clicking once over it.
  5. Click on the edit icon, from just above the list of securities.
  6. From the edit dialog box, click on the 'lookup' icon.
  7. This will load up the web page, where you can search for your required security.
