How do I resolve the error "Quicken could not establish an internet connection" when attempting to access Quicken online features?
This error occurs when the initialisation of your internet connection is
unsuccessful. That can happen for any of several reasons.
This error message may occur when using a 16-bit version of AOL
browser software with a 32-bit version of Quicken 98. Your
browser and Quicken software should both be the Windows 95
(32-bit) versions. To resolve, download and install the 32-bit AOL
software.
This error message may occur when using Quicken with proxy
settings when none are required. If you use Quicken at home and at
work and move your data file back and forth, you should check your
proxy settings. The proxy and port settings you set to be able to do
your banking at work need to be removed when using a dial up
connection at home.
This error message may occur when trying to connect to your
Internet Service Provider through Quicken, and you can't establish
an internet connection. In this case your ISP may not be configured
correctly. Exit Quicken, launch your ISP, launch Quicken, and
complete your online transactions.
Online Troubleshooting Guide - Basic
Follow these basic procedures when experiencing difficulties making online
connections through Quicken 98.
Modem Connections
Use this procedure if you are making an Internet connection through a
modem and telephone line using a local Internet Service Provider (ISP) or a
larger Internet service. (For direct Internet
connections [at work, school, etc], see Direct Internet Connection.)
Note: If you are using 32 bit Quicken 98 on Windows 95 with AOL 3.0,
make sure you have the 32 bit version of AOL 3.0 for Windows 95 (select
About America Online on the AOL Help menu to verify whether you have
the Windows 95 version of AOL). The 16 bit version of AOL 3.0 is not
compatible with 32 bit Quicken 98. To upgrade to the 32 bit version of
AOL, click Go/Keyword and enter UPGRADE .
-
Test your Internet connection:
Close the Quicken program.
Restart the computer.
Launch an Internet browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator for example).
Attempt to access the URL http://www.intuit.co.uk/
If the connection was not made, this problem will have to be resolved before you are able to access
any online services through Quicken. Refer to your computer manufacturer's manual or technical
support as well as your ISP.
If your browser successfully accessed please move to the next step in this procedure.
-
Verify Quicken 98's Internet connection setup:
Exit the Internet browser.
Launch Quicken 98.
Point to Internet Connection on the Online menu and choose Setup.
Follow the instructions on each screen. Make sure you specify that you are using an existing dialup connection,
and choose the Internet browser you want to use. (Certain specific online services are not available if you do not
select Microsoft Internet Explorer.)
If there is a problem during Internet setup, Quicken will provide detailed, online troubleshooting instructions.
Follow those instructions and proceed with this procedure when Quicken's Internet connection is correctly set up.
If there is no problem with the Quicken Internet connection setup, move to the next step in this procedure.
-
Test data download with Online Quotes:
Point to Investments on the Features menu and choose Set up Online Quotes and News. This will open the
Customise Investment Download window.
In the Customise Investment Download window, click the Quotes and News tab and select one or more
securities to be updated (a selected security will have a green tab next to it).
If you do not have any securities set up, click New Security and in the Setup Security window,
enter Royal Bank of Scotland as the security name and RBOS as the symbol, then click OK.
In the Customise Investment Download window, click Update Now.
If this was not successful, disable all virus protection software and attempt the download again.
-
When the stock quote download is successful go to Updating/Sending financial institution data. If you receive an
error message at this point, it is almost certainly related to the server you are trying to connect to. It is probably
busy or not in service. Simply wait and try again later.
Note: In the unlikely event you can't connect to an ISP or can't make a
connection to register your Quicken software, look over the Modem
Resources page to check the modem initialisation string and other modem
issues.
Direct Internet Connection
Use this procedure if you are making a direct Internet connection through a
Local Area Network (LAN). This would typically be through an employer
or school or other agency that makes a direct internet connection available
to you on a network.
-

Modem Resources
Connectivity issues with Intuit products rarely involve modems. If you are
able to regularly make Internet connections through an Internet Service
Provider (ISP), the modem is not usually at issue. If you do not typically use
online services and can't make an online connection to register your Intuit
software, there may be some issue regarding your modem. If a modem is
suspected as a source of any online connection difficulties, check these
resources.
Modem Setup
First, go through modem setup for your computer and check that these
items are correctly configured:
Manufacturer
Have you selected a manufacturer that correctly corresponds with your installed modem?
Modem model
Have you specified the correct model modem installed in your computer?
Baud rate
Have you selected a speed (baud rate) appropriate to the connection you need to make?
Often in troubleshooting, it is helpful to reduce speed to 2400 baud to see if a connection
can be made at that lower speed.
Port
Your modem will be set up to use a particular communications port (COM port).
Have you designated the correct one on your machine?
Initialisation string. Your modem is configured to send a particular set
of initialising commands (initialisation string or init string) when it tries
to make a connection. If those very specific commands are not
recognized or understood at the receiving end, you may need to
change your modem's init string.
Init Strings & Modem Manufacturers
Each modem may have a variety of init strings that work best under
different circumstances. And many modem manufacturers have a substantial
amount of technical support available on their sites:
