Quicken 98Back

Share Prices don't download or Symbol Lookup always launches Unit Trusts page.

This document relates to the following problems:

  1. When I try a lookup on a Share it launches the Unit/Investment Trust Page?
  2. When I try and update my share prices online none of then update, I have checked and all the symbols are correct.

These problems are caused when the Security Type List has become damaged. Damage usually occurs if the items have been deleted or were altered in a previous version of Quicken. This means that when Quicken 98 converts the data file certain information it needs for the share price update is missing or in the wrong place. This can be corrected using the procedure below.

Step 1:
First we need to verify which security types are available. To get to this information do the following:

  1. Click on Lists on the Menu Bar, select Investment, then select Security Type.
  2. If the types "Share" and "Unit/Inv. Trust" are missing add them now and go to Step
  3. Note: the spelling of these Security Types must be exactly as you see it above.
  4. If these items are present then proceed to Step 2
Step 2:
Now we need to find out if any of the existing security types are pointing to either of the Price Update sites:
  1. Open the Security List by clicking on Lists, then Investment, and then select Security
  2. Click on New, to create a new security
  3. Change the Security type to the first type in the list Note: It is VITAL that you go to the first type in the list, this is because when the Security Types List is damaged whatever is selected here initially will point to the Unit Trusts download site!
  4. If the "Look Up" button is greyed out, press the down cursor on the keyboard until you see an item where the "Look Up" button is not greyed out. The lookup button will be greyed out when the type selected can't be used for a share price download. Leave the "Name" blank and then click on "Look Up" and make a note of what page is launched this can be found by looking at the address bar on your Internet browser
    http://uk.guide.excite.com/quicken_ticker.search.htmll for Shares
    http://quicken.micropal.com../ukfundsearch.htmll for Unit Investment Trusts
  5. Continue until you have checked all of the available security types
  6. If none of the available types reveal an active "Look Up" button, go back to Step 1
  7. Rename the security type that launches the quicken.micropal.com page to Micropal. To do this:
    Select the Security Type
    Click on Edit
    Type in the new name
    Click on OK
  8. Rename the security type that launches the guide.excite.com page to Excite
  9. Rename the type Excite to "Share"
  10. Rename the type quicken.micropal.com to "Unit/Inv. Trust" Note it is very important that these are spelt exactly as above
Step 3:
We now need to verify that the new types are looking at the correct pages and then change our existing securities to the correct type
  1. Create a new security.
  2. Select any type other than the "Unit/Inv. Trust" or "Share"
  3. Then Select "Share"
  4. Click on Lookup and make a note of the page launched in your web browser http://uk.guide.excite.com/quicken_ticker.search.htmll for Shares http://quicken.micropal.com../ukfundsearch.htmll for Unit Investment Trusts this can be found by looking at the address bar on your Internet browser
  5. Repeat Steps 1 to 4 for Unit Investment Trusts, Using the Type "Unit/Inv. Trust" Instead of Share

If everything is correct then you can now proceed to change the types in your securities list as described in step 4.

Step 4:

  1. Click on Lists on the menu bar at the top of the screen
  2. Select Investments
  3. Then select Securities
  4. Select the security that needs to be changed
  5. Click on Edit
  6. Change the Security type by selecting either Share or "Unit/Inv. Trust" from the list
  7. Click on OK
