How do I use the Close Program or Task Manager utility in Windows to exit programs and TSRs?
Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) programs are applications that are activated when the computer is first started, such as screen savers, anti-virus programs, and background utilities. TSRs may divert computer resources that are needed by Quicken, especially on older or less powerful computers.
To exit unresponsive programs as well as unnecessary TSRs:
- Restart your computer. If you are on a network, do not log on to the network after restarting your computer.
- Use the Close Program or Task Manager utility:
- In Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium Edition (Me):
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open the Close Program window. This window displays a list of all programs that are currently running.
- Exit a program by selecting it from the list and then clicking the End Task button. (Please be aware that when you exit a program in this manner, you lose any unsaved information in that program.)
- Repeat the previous step for each program you want to exit.
- In Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP:
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
- Click the Task List or Task Manager button.
- Click the Applications tab. This tab displays a list of all programs that are currently running.
- Exit a program by selecting it from the list and then clicking the End Task button. (Please be aware that when you exit a program in this manner, you will lose any unsaved information in that program.)
- Repeat the previous step for each program you want to exit.
