Quicken 2002, XG, 2004
What should I do when I get the error message "Not enough disk space to save original file set"?
Background: The message "Not enough disk space to save original file set" followed by "Can't open file" and "Unable to open selected file" will occur when converting your data file from an earlier version of Quicken to a newer version if the file is on a floppy disk and there is not enough disk space for the conversion.
Additional disk space is needed when converting because Quicken makes a copy of the file during the conversion process. Therefore, there must be sufficient space on the disk for two copies of your data file. A 400 KB data file on a 1.4 MB floppy disk will convert and open successfully because there is enough space on the floppy to hold the copy that Quicken will make when converting. However, an 800 KB data file on a floppy will not convert and open because there isn't room on the 1.4 MB floppy disk for another 800 KB data file.
Solution: To resolve this issue, restore the data file from the floppy disk to the computer's hard disk, where there will be sufficient space to hold the additional copy Quicken automatically creates when the file is converted. After restoring the data file to the hard disk, open it in Quicken, and it will be correctly copied, converted and opened.
To restore a Quicken backup from a floppy disk to a computer's hard disk do the following:
Insert the floppy disk in the disk drive
Open your current version of Quicken
Choose File from the top menu bar, and select Restore Backup File. This wil open the Restore Backup File window
Choose to restore from A: or your floppy disk drive. Quicken will begin to restore your backup to the harddrive
When your backup has been successfully restored, choose File from the top menu bar and select Open
With the Open File window open, select your restored datafile from the list of files showing
Your file will now automatically convert to the new version format and open
