Quicken 2002, XG, 2004Back

What should I do when I get the message "Destination disk full", "Error reading source file", or "Unable to read source file"?

Background: The messages, "Destination disk full" or "Error reading source file" or "Unable to read from source file" almost always indicates that the floppy disk or other media that contains the backup file is defective, and Quicken cannot read the file to open it. In most cases, backing up your existing Quicken data file to a new floppy disk will resolve this issue.

An other possibility is the original Quicken file has damaged data, and the backed up version is too damaged to be opened. This is a more serious situation and will require maintenance on the original Quicken data file before any more data is added to it.

Solution: If the original data file is available, you can correct this error by , reformatting the floppy disk (meaning all data currently on the disk will be lost) and then backing up and restoring the original file. An alternative is to use a new floppy disk (properly formatted) to back up the original file and restore that.

If the original data file is not available or cannot be accessed, and the file was backed up to a disk, copy the backed up data file from the floppy disk to the hard drive of the computer where Quicken is installed. (Copy into the same folder where the Quicken program is installed.) If the file copies successfully, use the Quicken file now on the hard drive. If the computer cannot copy the backed up file from the floppy disk, then this is a sure sign the floppy disk is defective. The original file will then have to be backed up on a good floppy disk. If a restorable backup cannot be made from the original Quicken data file, the file itself is probably damaged. See Correcting Data Damage to resolve this.
