How do I restore a data file from a backup file?
Background:
Solution: To restore a Quicken file that you have backed up do the following:
Insert the disk (or other media) that contains the Quicken backup file.
Open the Quicken program.
From the File menu, choose Restore or Restore Backup File.
Select the drive where the backup media resides.
Click OK.
In the File name box, enter the name of the backup file exactly as shown in the window above, or select the backup file in the window.
Click OK.
Note: When you restore from a backup file, Quicken will overwrite the current file if it has the same name as the Quicken file stored on the backup disk. Be aware that you will lose any changes you have made to the current file since the backup was made.
If you don't have a backup of your data on a floppy disk or other media, you can restore a copy of your file from the Quickenw/Backup directory:
Open the Quicken program.
To verify the location of the Quicken file, click File to open the File menu. Review the recent file list at the bottom of the menu. The files are numbered in the order they were last opened. (Number "1" on the list is the file currently open in Quicken.)
From the File menu, choose Restore Backup File.
Select the drive where the current Quicken file is located (generally this is the local disk drive, C).
Click OK.
A Restore Quicken File dialogue box will appear. Browse to the folder where the current Quicken file is located (generally this is C:\Program Files\Quickenw, but may also be C:\Quickenw).
In the folder where the current Quicken file is located, Quicken has created a Backup folder. Open this folder. By default, Quicken should create five copies of each data file you use. If your Quicken file is called Qdata, these files would be:
Qdata1 (always the most recent file)
Qdata2
Qdata3
Qdata4
Qdata5
In the File name box, enter the name of the file you wish to restore exactly as shown in the window above, or select the file in the window.
Click OK.
