Why do I receive a "Duplicate category name" message when importing data from a .qif file?
Background: Possible Cause: A category name in the .qif file matches an account name in the data file. For example, if the category and the account are both named "Checking," this message will appear because Quicken does not allow category and account names to overlap.
Solution: To resolve this issue:
From the Quicken Tools menu, choose Account List.
Click Print, and then click OK. After the list has been printed, close the Account List window.
From the Tools menu, choose Category List.
Look for duplicate names by comparing the names in the Category column with the account names on the printout. When the duplicate is found, either:
Right-click the entry in the Category List window, choose Edit, enter a new Name, and then click OK, or
Right-click the account in the Account List window, choose Edit, enter a new Account Name on the General Information tab, and then click OK.
