How do I resolve errors I get while starting Quicken?

The two most common causes of errors when starting Quicken are: a corrupted installation of the Quicken program, or a corrupted data file.

To determine the cause of the error message:

Start Quicken without a data file:

Press the CTRL key while starting Quicken.

When Quicken successfully opens without a data file, only the File and Help menus will appear on a blank, gray screen.

If Quicken starts successfully without a data file, create a new data file by choosing New from the Quicken File menu.

Create a chequing account in the new file and make a few test entries. If this new file does not generate error messages, there is probably data damage in the old file. Correct data file corruption to resolve this issue.

If an error message or General Protection Fault (GPF) is generated while opening Quicken without a data file, reinstall Quicken.

To uninstall Quicken:

From the Microsoft Windows Start menu, choose Settings, and then choose Control Panel.

Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Install/Uninstall tab.

Select the Quicken program you want to uninstall.

Click Add/Remove to remove the program from your computer. If you receive a message referring to removing shared files, click OK.

Restart your computer.

Note: It is important that your restart your computer to complete the removal process.

To reinstall Quicken:

Insert the Quicken compact disc in the CD-ROM drive. The Microsoft Windows program should automatically begin the Quicken installation program. If the installation does not automatically begin:

From the Microsoft Windows Start, choose Settings, and then choose Control Panel.

Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click Install.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the Quicken program installation.

After the Quicken installation process completes, restart your computer. This will update files that were in use by the system when you installed Quicken.
